Motivation

Our ontology services attempt to consolidate simple ontologies leveraged across different applications. These services mainly address a few main complexities when working with ontologies:

  1. Ontology Annotations
While ontologies are extremely strong at connecting with other ontologies with axioms and reasoning. There is an inherit lack of connectivity from data that is not an ontology. To use ontologies in that fashion, we often leverage databases and curation to bridge the gap. One tool, POET, supports creating and connecting ontologies (by way of annotation) for Medical Action Ontology and Human Phenotype Ontology.

  2. Ontology Updates
Ontology communities are thriving more than ever. With that, ontology releases have become more frequent. The more ontologies you ingest into your applications, the more updates you will need inherit as a result. These services auto deploy when a new ontology is released giving you access to the most up-to-date terms.

  3. Ontology Storage
While most ontologies are on the smaller side, some can in-fact be very very big. As you ingest more ontologies this will cost both time and money to support. You will have to keep track of the terms and the ancestry bloating your application. These services are always live and serve parents, children, terms and even translations!

Funding & Support

This generic service can be deploy for almost any ontology to the cloud. We graciously will accept funding support for future iterations and implementations.

If you notice something wrong with a particular service or have feature requests, please follow the link to the generic repository in the top right and open an issue!
